UNEP/GEF IW:LEARN

   Environmental Information Systems

SEA START RC has many years experience in designing and developing Environmental Information Systems, including content management systems and web-based GIS, for both public and private sectors.

One of its key programmes is to implement the UNEP/GEF International Waters IW:LEARN project. Initiated in 2004, this project promotes experience sharing and learning among GEF International Waters projects and partners worldwide.

SEA START's role is to support the data and information sharing component of the project (in collaboration with UNEP/DEWA Nairobi office) focusing on:

1. Project management

2. Development and management of the GEF IW project portal - www.iwlearn.net - which serves as the knowledge base for GEF IW:LEARN and contains an extensive collection of resources, experiences, and materials for the portfolio.

3. Design and implementation of content management systems using Plone opensource software

4. Regional IT capacity building workshops for GEF projects and partners

  •  Mombasa (Kenya)
  •  Beijing (China)
  •  Boca Raton (USA)
  •  Athens (Greece - Sept 2008)
  • Turkey (Istanbul - 16-22 March 2009 at the World Water Forum, Turkey)
  • Tunisia (April/May 2009 - GeoNetwork workshop -  tentative)

5. Implementation of WebGIS using GeoNetwork opensource (a combined metadata catalogue, GIS viewer and search discovery tool)

6. Outreach including publishing of monthly newsletter (IW:LEARN E-Bulletin) to over 1000 water resource practitioners worldwide.
